Third Future Schools exists to actively close the achievement gap in public education. We know that too many students, especially those from historically underserved communities, face barriers that limit their academic opportunities and long-term success. By providing high-quality instruction, individualized support, and a focus on measurable growth, we ensure that every student has the tools, skills, and confidence to thrive in school and beyond. Closing the achievement gap isn’t just about test scores; it’s about equity, opportunity, and empowering the next generation to reach their full potential.
When we say our students make “a year and a half of growth in one year’s time,” we mean that in just 184 days of instruction, our students grow on average 1.5 times the amount expected for their grade level. These measurements are based on the nationally normed NWEA MAP Growth assessments, which are administered three times per year. This frequent testing allows us to track progress in real time and provide targeted interventions or supports as needed.
Expected growth varies by grade and subject, so we measure progress student by student, test by test. One year of growth is defined as the RIT score increase a student is expected to make in a single school year for a specific subject. For example, if a 3rd grade student is expected to grow 10 RIT points in math but instead grows 15 points, that student has achieved a year and a half of growth, a clear indicator of the impact of personalized instruction and focused support.
While student achievement in grades 3–8 is measured through NWEA and state exams, our youngest learners in grades K–2 demonstrate their progress through the nationally normed DIBELS assessment. We use DIBELS because, in the early grades, our primary focus is literacy, building strong foundational skills that set students up for long-term success.
At Third Future Schools, we are committed to Read by 3, ensuring every student becomes a confident reader before entering third grade. DIBELS benchmark assessments help us monitor growth throughout the year and ensure each child is on track for reading proficiency.
